Spearmint tea & your acne

Acne is a common skin concern that affects many individuals, impacting not only their physical appearance but also their confidence. I’ve struggled with acne on and off for years with the issue becoming its worst in my 30’s. While various skincare routines and treatments exist, some people turn to natural remedies like spearmint tea (not to be confused with the more common peppermint tea) to help alleviate acne symptoms. My skincare guru, Samantha, put me on to this and while I cannot say I am in the clear, I see a dramatic difference when I am being diligent about my intake of Spearmint Tea.

The Power of Spearmint Tea

Spearmint tea, derived from the leaves of the spearmint plant (Mentha spicata), has been consumed for centuries for its refreshing flavor and potential health benefits. Recent studies suggest that this aromatic tea may have a positive impact on acne, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and hormonal balancing properties.

Spearmint Tea & Hormonal Balance

One key factor in the development of acne is hormonal imbalance, particularly the overproduction of androgens like testosterone. Spearmint tea has been studied for its potential to lower androgen levels, thereby reducing the stimulation of sebum production. Excess sebum, when combined with dead skin cells, can clog pores and contribute to acne. By promoting hormonal balance, spearmint tea may help address the root cause of acne.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Inflammation plays a crucial role in the formation and persistence of acne. Spearmint tea contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that may help soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation. By calming the skin's response to acne triggers, spearmint tea may contribute to a smoother complexion.

If you're considering adding spearmint tea to your skincare regimen, which I suggest you do, here are some tips:

  1. Consistent Consumption: Drink 2 cups of spearmint tea regularly to potentially experience its acne-relieving benefits. I make a big batch on Sunday and put it in the fridge. I have one glass in the morning before I leave for work and one at night when I get home. If you are an office girlie, leave the tea on your desk so you don’t forget to have it throughout the day.

  2. Holistic Approach: While spearmint tea may offer support, it's essential to maintain a comprehensive skincare routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection.

  3. Consultation with a Professional: Before making significant changes to your skincare or dietary habits, consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional to ensure it aligns with your overall health and any existing conditions.

While spearmint tea's potential benefits for acne relief are promising, individual responses may vary. It's important to approach acne management with a holistic perspective, combining natural remedies with a well-rounded skincare routine. I hope this works for you and linked below you will find the tea that I use and a few other products I feel have helped clear my skin.
