Tracing Roots
A Journey to Puerto Rico with my Abuela
This past week, I had the privilege of traveling to Puerto Rico with my Abuela. It wasn’t just a vacation—it was a journey into our family’s roots, a chance to connect with where it all began. We visited the town where she was born, walked the streets she grew up on, and met relatives I’d only ever heard about.
Seeing her light up as she shared memories of her childhood was a gift I’ll cherish forever. One moment that stands out was sitting on our terrace in the morning, enjoying coffee, and asking her about her journey to the United States from Cataño. It made me realize just how much strength, sacrifice, and love it took for her to build the life that ultimately shaped mine.
But it wasn’t just about the past—we also made new memories. From eating way too much mofongo to dancing in the plaza after a few cervezas, this trip reminded me of the power of family, heritage, and being present.
This week, my Pearl is simple: gratitude. Gratitude for the chance to reconnect with my Abuela in such a meaningful way and for the reminder that life’s richest moments aren’t found in grand gestures but in the quiet, shared experiences that leave lasting imprints on your heart.
If there’s one thing I learned on this trip, it’s this: don’t wait. Don’t wait to visit the places that hold meaning, to call your loved ones, or to soak in the stories that made you who you are. Life is precious—make the most of it.
